| For over 30 years, NEADS/Dogs
for Deaf and Disabled Americans has carefully partnered children and adults
with highly trained canine assistants.
NEADS is a vibrant 501 (c) (3) non-profit
organization. We strive to maintain the highest standards of training,
involve our clients every step of the way, and do our best to facilitate
personal, interactive relationships with our supporters.
Canines for Combat
Veterans
We launched this program in October 2006.
It is NEADS’ great honor to help service men and women regain their
independence … one Assistance Dog at a time through this program. To date,
we have partnered five veterans with working dogs, including the first
female veteran in the country to receive an Assistance Dog.
Prison PUP Program
This Partnership is literally changing
lives. Puppies are raised by inmate trainers in correctional facilities
under the weekly supervision of NEADS’ instructors. NEADS began its 13th
Prison PUP Partnership this year. Over 100 puppies have now been trained
through this partnership, and over 80% of our pups are now raised by
inmates. The program is working on all fronts, but most importantly, it’s
reducing the time a client must wait for a dog – as more pups are trained
more efficiently and return to NEADS with a broader skill set. It is a “win..win”
situation as inmates learn important skills and are able to “give back” to
society and the disabled recipients gain a helpful partner and faithful
companion.
We hope to increase the number of
Assistance Dog Teams we graduate each year to meet the needs of our current
waiting list along with the new population of wounded veterans returning
from the Iraq/Afghanistan war.
